Shakeel is a Consultant and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. Shakeel specialises in treating patients requiring complex and advanced restorative treatment including surgical placement and restoration with dental implants.He is the Chairman for the Advisory Board in Implant Dentistry for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology and a Diplomate of The ...ate of The British Society of Oral Implantology. He is also the current Chairman of the ITI UK & Ireland Section.
Shakeel was awarded a Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry at the Queen’s University of Belfast in 1995. In 1997, he attained Fellowship to The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and finally, he undertook a hospital-based accredited 5-year specialist training in Restorative Dentistry at the Newcastle Dental Hospital, which he completed in 2005. He also completed a 4-year part-time research degree at Newcastle University for which he was awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).
Shakeel has gained the highest restorative qualification in the United Kingdom in the form of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Restorative Dentistry, which is awarded jointly by the English and the Scottish Royal Colleges of Surgeons. He is registered with The General Dental Council as a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, and Endodontics.
The 5-year specialist-training programme is unique to the United Kingdom and this training is mandatory for an appointment to a Consultants’ post. In 2005, Shakeel was appointed as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at The Royal London Dental Hospital, part of the Barts Health NHS Trust.
He also is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, where he is involved in training of future consultants, specialists and postgraduate students. He has a special interest in Implant Dentistry and is the Clinical Lead for postgraduate implant training. He lectures both nationally and internationally on various aspects of restorative dentistry, in particular implant dentistry, gum surgery and tooth wear.
